Enterprise databases are the lifeblood of IT. They are relied upon for everything from business intelligence to seismic interpretation. And it’s no secret that these databases consume an enormous amount of CPU cycles and I/O throughput.
In the past, IT administrators resorted to a combination of 15,000 rpm disk drives, short-stroking, and massive parallelism to boost I/O speeds. Using these techniques, a storage system could be pushed to, say, 100,000 Input Output Instructions per Second (IOPS). But as databases grew larger and the number of database users (and queries) increased, even the fastest disk-based systems could not sustain the required performance.
Enter flash storage. Because it uses solid-state technology, flash is faster and more reliable than hard disk drives (HDDs). With flash technology, an ability to deliver over 1 million IOPS is not only possible, it has become commonplace in today’s all-flash storage systems.
