We are pleased to share that King County has won the Amazon Web Services City on a Cloud Challenge, in the Best Practices Award Category, through its use of NetApp AltaVault with AWS S3 and Glacier. The City on a Cloud Innovation Challenge recognizes local and regional governments who have deployed innovative solutions to help solve a government challenge.
King County is one of the fastest growing counties in the U.S., located in the state on Washington, with almost two million residents. With over 17 agencies and data growing by 50% a year, tape-based backup had become costly and unreliable. King County turned to NetApp AltaVault for a more affordable and flexible backup solution.
AltaVault cloud?integrated storage appliances proved to be 70% less expensive for King County to deploy than upgrading existing equipment, and also supported seamless integration with AWS and Veeam backup software. With an AltaVault and AWS backup solution, King County significantly cut costs and is keeping records secure and accessible.
According to Bob Micielli, Senior Enterprise Technology Manager for King County, the adoption of AltaVault with AWS has given the county an unbeatable, enterprise-class solution. “We now have an enterprise-class data protection and recovery solution that helps us to provide more affordable services to our residents and protect their data,” says Micielli.
The county avoided spending an estimated $1.1 million it would have cost to update their outdated data storage infrastructure – that includes Public Health, jail and DCHS records of more than 20TB each day- King County’s IT staff replaced it the backup system with a new automated method using cloud storage while maintaining privacy. It will also save them about $300,000 each year by automating the system. While King County is a customer of NetApp and Amazon, it was their IT staff that created the solution. The team at King County exemplifies a best-in-class county agency that embraces emerging technologies to time and cost associated with IT.
The next wave of IT innovation will continue to prove that data protection is an integral part of any data management framework. Read more about the future of data protection in the ESG white paper, “Where Data Protection Must Evolve To, and Why.”
